COIMBATORE: The First Judicial Magistrate Court in Coimbatore briefly resembled a shandy (market) on Thursday, as 20 roosters, seized during an illegal cock fight, were auctioned off inside the court hall. In fact it was an unusual and amusing sight of roosters ruling the roost.People from all walks of life ranging from advocates to villagers fiercely bade for the fighter cocks and the auction fetched Rs 9,000 which will be deposited in the State’s treasury. The roosters were seized during a late night raid at a hamlet in the foothills of Chinna Thadagam. The police had rounded up 20 persons and rescued an equal number of roosters. The 20 villagers, produced before JM L S Sathiyamurthy were let free after they paid a fine of Rs 100 each. But the police and judicial officers were caught in a tricky situation not knowing what to do with the cocks. As per law, all seized property must be deposited with the State treasury. Finally the judge came up with an interesting solution. “Since the seized property is a living organism, it is difficult to keep them in custody for long. So the court decides to auction them immediately in the hall and deposit he sum in the treasury,” the judge said in his order. As the court staff began auctioning process, villagers and advocates in the hall started bidding fiercely. The auction fetched Rs 9,000 which along with  Rs 24,865 cash seized  was deposited with the treasury.
