HYDERABAD: On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy signed the file relating to implementation of Re 1-a-kg subsidised rice scheme for the below poverty line (BPL) families from November 1 (AP Formation Day).After offering floral tributes to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, the chief minister signed the file.In a message, Kiran Kumar Reddy said taking inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi's ideals, the state government had evolved subsidised rice scheme for benefit of the poor.With the support of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Re 1-a-kg rice scheme will be implemented in the state. About 2.26 crore BPL families will get benefited from it.In addition to the existing 2.1 cr white ration cards, another 25 lakh new cards will be issued to eligible poor families during the second phase of Rachchabanda starting October 15.At present, Rs 2,000 crore is being spent for implementation of Rs 2-a-kg rice scheme. An extra amount of Rs 600 cr will be spent for implementation of Re 1-a-kg rice scheme. The implementation of scheme costs Rs 2,600 cr to state exchequer.
