He took part in the 80km Tour de Charlottenlund in Denmark.

New Delhi: Michael Rasmussen returned to competition for the first time since being expelled from the Tour de France, riding in a street race in Denmark on Monday in front of thousands of cheering supporters.

Around 20,000 spectators attended the Tour de Charlottenlund and applauded Rasmussen with some wearing t-shirts that proclaimed him the real winner of the Tour de France.

Though he led for a major part of the race, Rasmussen failed to win after falling behind in the sprint. Tour de Charlottenlund is an 80km race with a majority of cyclists being amateurs.

The race was won by Team CSC's Nicki Sorensen.

Rasmussen was sacked by his team Rabobank and thrown out of the Tour last month while leading the race for lying to the team about his training whereabouts, an allegation he denies.

Tour de France was won Alberto Contador of Spain.
