Rains that began on Tuesday night continued on Wednesday, with occasional showers throughout the day in various parts of the city. The overcast skies provided relief from the sun although the temperature was a couple of degrees above normal, at a maximum of 36.5 degree Celsius.
Light showers were seen in the city throughout the day, whereas places like Old Mahabalipuram Road, Sholinganallur, Navalur and other areas along the stretch experienced heavy rains in the evening.
As early as 5 pm, reports of heavy traffic on OMR were posted on the Chennai City Traffic Police page. Commuters said that the congested roads were due to the downpour, for which several people were unprepared. Gayathri, an employee of an IT firm at Navalur, said, “I usually take the 7.45 pm shuttle back home to Kolathur. It’s 8 pm and the bus has not yet returned from its previous trip, so I don’t know when I am going to reach home today.”
Deputy Director General of Meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre, Dr YEA Raj, attributed the rains to convective rainfall, which is characteristic of the southwest monsoon at this time of the year. “We are getting rain due to thundershower activity. These rains are not expected to continue for several days, but some subdued activity will be there,” he said, adding that some amount of rainfall would be seen on Thursday morning, but the intensity would decrease after that.
