New Delhi: It's time for the harvest festival Baisakhi in Punjab and Haryana, the nation's food bowl. The festival marks the coming of the New Year.
People throng Gurudwaras, where special readings from the Guru Granth Sahib are organised, on this day.
The festival falls on April 13 and 14 and marks the beginning of the solar year. This is also the time when farmers thank God for a good harvest.
Baisakhi has special significance for Sikhs as on this day in 1699, their tenth guru, Guru Gobind Singh, organised the order of the Khalsa.
Farmers in other parts of the country also harvest their rabi crops on this day. The festival of Baisakhi occurs at the same time as the Hindu Vedic New Year which is celebrated in different parts of India - Bihu in Assam, Naba Barsha in Bengal, Puthandu in Tamil Nadu and Pooram Vishu in Kerala.
This is also the day when Sri Lanka celebrates the Sinhala or the Tamil new year.
