The activists of Kannada Rakshana Vedike on Friday launched a protest march to block the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border on the National Highway near Karyapalya, in protest against the Supreme Court order to release water to Tamil Nadu.
They are expected to reach the border on Saturday, after covering a distance of 35 km.
The activists, led by Manjunath Gowda, offered prayers at Chamarajeshwara Temple before launching the march.
Meanwhile, members of the Federation of Kannada Sangha drew public attention against the SC order by carrying stone slabs on their heads in Chamarajanagar.
Federation president Murali charged that the SC had given death blow to farmers of Karnataka. Former MLA M K Somashekar and various pro- Kannada organisations also staged a flash protest at Ramaswamy Circle here on Friday.
The protestors burnt tyres on the road to express their anguish against the SC’s order. Mysore Kannada Vedike and Karnataka Rakshana Vedike activists said instead of asking the state to release water the SC should assess ground realities.
Tamilians In Support Meanwhile in Shimoga, members of Federation of Tamil Organisations said the 60 lakh Tamilians living in the state would first support Karnataka in the Cauvery water dispute.
Federation state convener M P Sampath told reporters that the government could release excess water to Tamil Nadu after fulfilling all its needs.
“First, we require water for drinking, agricultural and industrial purposes. As we are living here, Karnataka is our state and we would support the stand of the state government on the Cauvery row,” he added.
The leaders of all Tamil organisations in Karnataka would take out a silent march from Palace Grounds to Town Hall in Mysore on Wednesday, he added.
