Mumbai: It is a drama that is intensifying by the day. With producers and multiplex owners still divided on their profit sharing ideas, any kind of resolve between the two parties seems unlikely.
The producers are demanding 50 per cent profit share from the exhibitors for every film irrespective of their starcast or budget, a price that the exhibitors are not ready to cough up.
Filmmaker Mukesh Bhatt said, "Its our legitimate right to ask that we are principally not wrong and we will stick by our demands thats our resolve or we will perish."
But while the exhibitors have turned down their demands they have come up with a module by which profit sharing will be based completely on the performance of a film at the box office.
CEO Fame Adlabs Shavan Shroff said, "We have suggested a median threshold that we will pay for every film, be it big actors or small, we have suggested to them yardstick. If a particular movie crosses a certain threshold, we are willing to pay more."
Just like the producers, the multiplex owners claim that they too have to deal with a lot of problems including those dumped on them by leading producers and top actors.
Shroff said, “Heroes mat nikalo theatre say Salman bure maan jayega, bhai ki film hai, par log to ho and I cannot even sell tickets to other films."
Though this Friday saw the release of Akshay Kumar starrer 8 X 10 Tasveer, no big releases are scheduled for a while due to the upcoming IPL series. And if the problem between the producers and the multiplex owners doesn’t find a solution soon; it will be a dry spell for cinegoers in the coming months.
