Setting an example for many, a group of young men rescued a pregnant cow which was brought to an illegal slaughter house in the city.

The youth succeeded in rescuing the cow as the  butcher was also reluctant to kill it. More  importantly, a communal flareup, did not take place as more sensible people were involved in the rescue act.Cows have a divine status among a section of the people across the country.

After receiving a tip off, Praveen Chandran, secretary, the Indigenous Cow Protection Force (ICPF) rescued the cow from an unauthorised  slaughter house in Karakkamandapam.

He told Express that they could rescue the cow as butcher Ashraf was reluctant to kill it. When he noticed that the cow was in an advanced stage of pregnancy, he intimated the matter to an ICPF activist Abhilash who in turn informed Praveen.

Praveen, did not make it an issue as it would have had serious repercussions including a communal flareup during Onam and ID days.

He bought the cow, a Kumblassery variety of Kankayam breed, an indigenous breed facing extinction, by paying Rs 12,000. He took the cow to a ‘gosala’ dedicated for indigenous cows set up in Vithura under the Ditto Health and Wellness Institutions Pvt Ltd, a company formed by a group promoting natural farming. Praveen said that the government should have shown more responsibility in preventing at least the slaughter of cows belonging to the  indigenous  breed.

“Indigenous cows are facing extinction. There are only 47 breeds of indigenous cows left in the entire country. The Kankayam breed, Vechur cows, Kasargod Dwarf, Kapila breed all have their own uniqueness in spite of low milk production,” he said.

He said that Kankayam breed is useful for producing ‘panchagavyam’, a medicine useful for various diseases.

He said that they have been maintaining a 30 acre farm in Vithura for natural farming using only dung and urine from the seven indigenous cows kept in the ‘gosala’. “Vinayan , an officebearer of the ICPF said that so far 62 people had registered with them for indigenous breeds of cows.
