The Centre has indicated that the appointment of a new External Affairs Minister may not take place immediately.

New Delhi: Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee will represent India at the annual UN General Assembly meet later this month.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would not be attending the UN meet as he would be traveling to Cuba for the NAM summit around the same time.

The Centre has indicated that the appointment of a new External Affairs Minister may not take place immediately.

The PM has been looking after the External Affairs Portfolio ever since former external affairs minister Natwar Singh resigned in the wake of the Iraqi oil-for-food scam.

The portfolio of External Affairs Minister was expected to be filled before the Prime Minister left for Brazil on September 10.
