ANANTAPUR: Puttaparthi town plunged into darkness as APTransco officials disconnected power supply to the town on Saturday, following dues mounting up to Rs 55 lakh. With no proper response from the town administration pertaining to clearance of dues, Transco officials on Saturday disconnected the power, which created confusion among the devotees. From evening till past midnight, there was no power supply.
There was no light on the streets and the devotees, including those from abroad, found it shocking. Many had a difficult time negotiating the roads and walkers used mobile phones to light up the path. It became a hot topic in the town and people felt it was an insult to the town.Three months ago, Puttaparthi village panchayat was upgraded to municipality. When it was a panchayat, it ran into dues to the tune of Rs 55 lakh to APTransco. A month ago, notices were served to the municipality.
