The picture of Agumbe and surrounding villages, which were tilting towards naxalism, is gradually changing with the initiatives taken by the district administration and the police department on providing the much-needed basic infrastructure. Together, they have decided to take people into confidence and provide facilities to bring them back to the mainstream.
Every month, the district administration has been conducting meetings to review the progress of works taken up. The police department is taking the lead in discussing the issues related to road, drinking water, street lights, transportation, title deeds with the district administration. Absence of electricity was one of the major problems in the villages. The absence of power helped the anti-social elements visit those villages and exploit them. As providing electricity could ease the problem and keep naxals away, the administration has taken steps to provide electricity to the villages. As giving electricity to each house will become a costly affair, the department is planning to provide solar lights to Ulmadi, Makodu, Hemmane, Kademane, Hosangadi, Tallurangadi, Hosagadde, Balehalla and Mallandur. Each LED solar light would cost approximately Rs 23,000. Tender process will be completed in a couple of days and work will start within a month, official sources said. Zilla Panchayat CEO Dr Sanjay Bijjur told Express, “Providing solar lights will ease the problem. Illegal activities happening during night could be checked.” “SP Raman Gupta a submitted the proposal to the DC based on the police report. The survey has been completed and the process will start soon,” he added. DC M V Vedamurthy on Saturday directed the MESCOM officials to provide street lights in some villages.
Apart from this, it has taken up road development works in the region at an estimated cost of Rs 1.60 crore.
Currently, metalling work would be completed in the first phase and asphalting would be taken up after the rainy season, the SP said. ‘We Want KSRTC Buses’ Despite the district administration’s direction, the KSRTC is dragging its plying buses to some villages. When Express visited those villages, the residents demanded KSRTC bus facility as it would help their children to go schools.
