At least 60 Congress workers were reportedly injured when police resorted to mild lathi-charge while they were trying to march to the state Assembly from the party office at Jawahar Bhawan, a party official said.
Along with mild baton charge, police used water cannons to disperse the agitating party workers, state Congress unit spokesman Pankaj Chaturvedi said.
However, police said action against protesting Congressmen was taken as they violated the prohibitory orders.
The workers, led by state party unit president Arun Yadav and Leader of Opposition in MP Assembly Satyadev Katare, were demanding immediate payment of compensation to farmers whose crops have been hit by heavy rains and hailstorm, and a CBI probe into the Professional Examination Board (PEB) scam, Chaturvedi said.
The police action took place near the Jawahar Bhawan, he said, adding that Yadav had to climb onto one of the barricades for protection.
