MADARANTAKAM: Two criminals who impersonated as police officers and looted people, particularly the nocturnal lorry drivers near Padalam between Chengalpattu and Madurantakam were taken into custody on Friday.Murthy (45), from Madurantakam, posed on the highway as though he was the Padalam Station Inspector, and Mahalingam (36), from Karungkuli as his crime constable. Both were on 'patrol duty' on the highway near Padalam, and Mahalingam would bring the 'erring' drivers to his superior for compromise, and collect money for not filing cases.Using this modus operandi, the duo also looted from others over a few weeks. They were also accused of snatching gold ornaments from women waiting at the bus stops after sunset. In all, they had looted things and cash worth about a lakh of rupees.Further investigations revealed the men were also involved in six other cases, said DSP Thanigaivel of Madurantakam.
