New Delhi: Union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal had a narrow escape on Sunday as one of the engines of the flight in which he was flying developed a fire shortly after landing in Varanasi.

Officials of Lal Bahadul Shastri Airport said that Jaiswal and the other passengers had already alighted from the Jet Airways flight when the fire broke out.

The incident occurred at 1214 hours (IST) when the plane was on its way from New Delhi. Jet Airways manager Anirudh Kumar Singh told PTI that the fire was caused due to heating.

Soon after the engine caught fire, the CISF personnel surrounded the aircraft as a security measure. Fire tenders were rushed to the spot and they managed to douse the flames within seven minutes.

A team of engineers repaired the engine of the plane which left for Khajuraho at 1258 hours (IST). Jaiswal then left for Ghazipur district for electioneering in favour of Congress candidates.
