Srirangam, Tamil Nadu: The Dalit violence that engulfed Maharashtra after the alleged desecration of B R Ambedkar's statue in Kanpur had just died down that a similar incident was reported from Tamil Nady early on Thursday morning.
Tension gripped the holy town of Srirangam as a life-size cement statue of Dravidar Kazhagam (DK) party founder E V Ramasamy, popularly known as Periyar E V Ramasamy installed near the 'Rajagopuram' (prime temple Tower) of the historic Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple, was damaged by the activists of Hindu Makkal Katchi (HMK).
The Deputy Commissioner of police (Law and Order) M Rajasekharan was quoted by news agency UNI as saying that four activists of HMK, all hailing from Coimbatore District were caught red-handed by the police at 0445 hrs when they attempted to damage the statue with a big hammer by climbing over the pedestal of the statue.
They were identified as vice president of HMK Coimbatore District Manickam,, Coimbatore District Secretary of HMK Senthil Kumar, party's district youth-wing Secretary Rajasekaran, and District Union Secretary Sujeet.
He said four police personnel, including two head constables from the Srirangam police station were suspended for dereliction of duty.
Rajeskharan said some portion of the head of the statue was broken and a large number of police personnel were posted in and around Srirangam town to prevent any untoward incidents.
