New Delhi: The Independence Day celebrations in Kashmir passed off peacefully on Wednesday for the second consecutive year.
Thousands of people attended the functions at the various district headquarters of the Valley.
"There were no reports of violence from anywhere in the valley so far and functions at district headquarters also passed off peacefully," PTI quoted official sources as saying.
The main function was held at Bakshi stadium in Srinagar where Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad hoisted the National Flag.
About 18,000 people watched the three-hour proceedings at the stadium, which wore a festive look.
A composite cultural programme organised by Academy for Art, Culture and Languages, Department of Information and Department of Education received a thunderous applause from the audience.
A number of dignitaries, including chairman of legislative council Ghulam Nabi Lone and Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir high court Justice Aftab Alam, were present at the function.
In Kupwara, state Tourism Minister Dilawar Mir hoisted the tricolour, while Housing and Urban Developmment minister Qazi Mohammad Afzal presided over the function at newly created Ganderbal district.
At Budgam, Transport Minister Hakim Mohammad Yaseen hoisted the national flag while Education Minister Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed took salute at the function held at Pulwama. Agriculture minister Abdul Aziz Zargar hoisted the tricolour at Anantnag while Khalil Mohammad Bandh, MoS roads and buildings presided at Shopian.
