BANGALORE: Pandit Sheshagiri Hangal, one of the country’s foremost tabla maestros was felicitated on Sunday at an event organised by Sri Guru Samartha Sangeeta Vidyalaya. Veteran theatre artiste Master Hirannaiah presented a memento to Pt Hangal. “I am not used to talking as I am only used to playing tabla. But I would like to thank my gurus for whatever I have achieved,” said the 90-year old Pt Hangal, a born handicapped. He gave his first solo performance for Mumbai (Bombay) Radio in 1949. When All India Radio (AIR) opened its Dharwad station in 1951, he joined with a modest starting salary of `120. He is the brother of Hindustani music doyen late Gangubai Hangal.Master Hirannaiah spoke vigorously about the current state of music, criticising the loss of values and dedication. “The concept of music has gone for a toss. Parents are sending children to reality music shows. I request parents to introduce music to children at an age when they can understand the meaning,” he said and “I am honoured to honour Pandit Hangal. It is artistes like him who teach us the real art.”
