New Delhi: The Special Investigation Team from Pakistan probing the Pathankot terror attack will visit India in mid-March and is likely to get access to the Pathankot air base, sources said Thursday.
Top sources in the government told CNN-IBN that the SIT will be extended "full cooperation". The nodal agency for contact for the team visiting India will be the National Investigations Agency (NIA).
The team is likely to get access to parts of the Pathankot IAF base where the attack took place, sources said, adding that those are non-operational areas where no military assets are located.
Since India and Pakistan do not have a mutual legal assistance treaty, the Ministry of External Affairs has sent letters rogatory to Islamabad on this.
The SIT was set up by the Pakistan government for probing the January 2 attack based on the leads given by India which showed that the attackers came from across the border. Later it lodged an FIR in the case, which was seen by India as a "step forward" in bringing the perpetrators of the strike to justice.
The FIR was, however, filed against "unknown persons" though India had named Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar as the mastermind of the attack and demanded action against him and his accomplices.
Six terrorists attacked the IAF base on January 1 killing seven security personnel before being gunned down in an operation which lasted more than three days.
