As one approaches Nanjumalige Circle in Mysuru, the aroma of ghee dosa fills the air, evoking memories of the small hotel once run by Mahadevappa. This hotel, where Mahadevappa prepared ghee dosas, is now a cherished memory. Despite its roadside ambience, people would wait 15 to 20 minutes to enjoy their dosas, reflecting the hotel’s popularity. The hotel was initially opened by Mahadevappa’s father before independence. Later, Mahadevappa took over. Sadly, 90-year-old Mahadevappa passed away four days ago due to age-related issues. What set Mahadevappa’s hotel apart was its unique operating hours, from 7 am to 11 am, during which he conducted business for just five hours each day. Now, his son Mahesh continues to keep the legacy alive, serving the beloved ghee dosa in honour of Mahadevappa.
Visitors say that eating a dosa here feels like enjoying one at home, with very affordable prices. More people opt for takeaways than those who sit and eat at the hotel.
Usually, hotels are loaded with conversations, from customers to cleaners, delivery people, cashiers, and owners. Sometimes, the chatter seems excessive. Mahadevappa was different. The only words often heard from Mahadevappa were related to the menu, like “How much idli?” He rarely smiled or engaged in extra conversation. Many visitors to the hotel likely shared this experience. Yet, Mahadevappa was neither angry nor harsh. He was dedicated to his work, embodying a philosophy of living by one’s labour. Such a unique individual is now just a memory.
Last month, in a bid to boost turnout in Bengaluru during polling on Phase 2 of the Lok Sabha poll, several hotels, pubs, and taxi aggregators announced discounts, freebies, and free rides.
Fourteen constituencies of Karnataka, including Bengaluru, are going to polls on Friday. Over 1 crore people are eligible to cast votes in Bengaluru. They will have to show their inked index finger for the offers. This is not the first time such initiatives have been announced. According to a report in The Times of India (TOI), Nisarga Grand Hotel on Nrupatunga Road is set to offer free butter dosa, ghee rice, and a beverage to voters on voting day.
