In a tragic incident late on Monday night, an overspeeding car hit a divider, killing the co-passenger in Delhi's South Extension area. The driver of the car fled but was later apprehended. Police is investigating whether the driver is a minor.
Ironically, the accident comes on the day the Delhi Police has started Operation Seizure for implementation of stricter road safety rules and harsher punishments for offenders.
Traffic rule-breakers, rash drivers may have to pay higher fines and third-time offenders will have their driving licence seized. The step comes in accordance with recommendations made by Supreme Court on road safety.
Licences of even first time offenders may be confiscated if the nature of the violation is grave. Offenders will have to approach the transport department for clearance of the seized licence. E-challan machines have already been put in place.
