KOCHI: With a view to highlight the importance of organic farming, ‘Organic Kerala 2012’, a exhibition-cum-sale of organic agricultural products organised by Organic Kerala Charitable Trust is on at the Ernakulam Town Hall.“The main reason behind conducting this fest is to encourage people to start producing organic vegetables and other food crops. Most of the food consumed in Kerala comes from other states. Since these crops are grown for commercial purposes, the farmers use a lot of chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Consequently, these chemicals have an adverse effect on our health. This is one of the reasons why the cases of life-threatening diseases like cancer is going up in the state,” said M M Abbas, director, Organic Kerala Charitable Trust.Over 20 rice varieties grown in the Malabar region, many varieties of tuber crops grown in southern Kerala, different types of mangoes, coffee beans and many other agro products grown through organic farming are the major attractions of the fest. Rare species of organic cardamom are also showcased. The fest was inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies K V Thomas. Tuesday onwards, stalls will be set up at Gandhi Bhavan, Kacherippady, as well.
