Chennai: Former Indian cricket captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth on Monday said that onfield umpires were the best judge despite the element of human error in determining leg before wicket decisions.
"Referring it (decision) to third umpire means a waste of time. If every alternate ball is to be decided by the television umpire, the match cannot be completed in stipulated period of time," Srikkanth said.
The cricketer-turned-commentator admitted that there was some truth in ICC's Elite panel Umpire Steve Bucknor's claims that television crews doctored images to show umpires in poor light.
"There is some truth in Bucknor's claims on television replays with reference to LBW decisions," he said referring to extension of the role of technology in the game.
"On-field umpires are the better judges to define and determine LBW decisions. It is not correct to interfere with umpires' decisions on this count. There is a point, since there is definitely a vast difference between positioning of the camera and where the umpire is standing straight to the other wicket. The umpire is in the best of position. The charm of the game itself is the human error involved in it," he said.
The former Indian opening batsman said "we comment on LBW decisions after seeing it on ultra slow motion and if the ball is going away or so, we put mat on the pitch. We have lot of time to come up with suggestions."
