Rocked by frequent controversies, the Oommen Chandy -led government which has crossed its first year in office, is in a tight spot.

The renewed schism in the Congress over the organisational revamp is also troubling it.  How the government will weather the storm created by service and youth organisations against the proposed contributory pension scheme is another question mark.

The leaders  of the UDF constituent parties will meet here on Monday to discuss the issues, though Nelliampathy is the main agenda.

It is clear that no political solution to the Nelliampathy issue is possible at this juncture. According to indications, the leaders may leave the matter for a  legal solution.

“With so much of vested interests and no room for a consensus, a political solution is impossible for it. It is a legal conundrum,” said SJD secretary general Dr Varghese George,  member of the UDF sub-committee assigned to  study the estates’ issue. The parallel evidence collection by MLAs  T N Pratapan and V D Satheesan had led to the resignation of official panel convenor M M Hassan.

“The UDF will chalk out a solution,” KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala said. ‘’Government land cannot be alienated. Settler farmers’ issues and encroachments are different,” he maintained.

The Congress will chair the meet without being able to put its own house in order.

The long-pending organisational revamp in the state unit has jolted leaders like union ministers Vayalar Ravi and Mullapally Ramachandran, V M Sudheeran and K Muraleedharan MLA to join forces against steamrolling by the A and I camps. Ravi held talks with Muraleedharan on Saturday and they have announced that the revamp should not be on group basis.

Till now, the exercise was moving on the lines of an understanding between the dominant groups led by Oommen Chandy and Ramesh.

The fallout of the proposal to introduce the contributory pension scheme from April will also have to be tackled. Smaller parties in the UDF are critical that policy issues are not being discussed in the proper forum.

Whether it is the Aranmula airport or Nelliampathy issue, the pattern is continuing.
