Bhubaneswar: Nearly 17 people have died in Odisha due to a heat wave. The state government has confirmed two such deaths and the causes of the rest of the deaths are under verification. In most parts of the state, the temperature is above 40 degree Celsius and in several places, the mercury is touching almost 44 degrees.
The worst affected places are Bhubaneswar, Titlagarh, Talcher, Sambalpur and Jharsuguda.
The state government has conducted a series of emergency meetings to cope with the situation and has declared closure of all schools in the state from May 1 and all colleges from May 9. Non-AC buses have been instructed not to ply between 11 am to 3 pm.
The state government has also initiated steps for opening of dedicated heat-stroke treatment rooms in all district headquarter hospitals.
The intense heat has also led to a scarcity of drinking water in several rural pockets and frequent power cuts have only added to the misery.
