Nurses' wages: Kerala govt mulling legislation
The govt will not allow any private hospital to function without paying minimum wages to nurses, said the Labour Minister.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala government was mulling a new legislation to deal with the wages and other allowances of nurses and other paramedical staff working in private hospitals in the state.

This was stated by Minister for Labour Shibu Baby John in the Assembly on Monday while replying to a submission which highlighted the plight and working conditions of nurses in private hospitals.

The government would not allow any private hospital to function without paying minimum wages to nurses, he said.

Moving the submission, Hibi Eden (Cong) said most of the private hospitals deny the nurses even the minimum wages prescribed by the government.

Eden also brought to the notice of the House the agitation of nurses in several hospitals demanding better wage scale. He wanted a new legislation to deal with the wages of nurses and to ensure better protection and working conditions for them in private hospitals which presently come under Shops and Commercial Establishment Act.

Out of the 750 private hospitals, John said, only 45 pay minimum wages to nurses. A committee set up by the government was studying the working conditions of nurses and other paramedical staff in private hospitals.

The government would take further steps on the matter after getting its report, he added.
