New Delhi: Railways has asked its staff to opt for physical training or yoga to improve agility and level of alertness in view of train mishaps. The staff, especially the locomotive pilots and assistant station masters, can choose between physical training and yoga, which was introduced in 2001. The move follows a study by Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) on 'analysis of causative factors for human error during train accidents' and its suggestion for improving behavioural techniques.
RDSO is a premier research body of the public transport behemoth in the country, which at present has a strength of over 70,000 locomotive pilots.
"Railway employees attending training be given the option of either choosing physical training or yoga with a view to improve their fitness agility and level of concentration," a circular issued by Railways has said.
"The training is also aimed at improving the efficiency level of the staff, beat the stress bug and tensions associated with the job," a Railway Ministry official said. Human error has been blamed for some of the recent rail accidents including the Sainthia train mishap in West Bengal in July 2010 that killed over 60 people.
Safety steps like incorporation of technologies such as anti-collision device, train protection warning system etc to prevent train collision have been taken, but questions have been raised whether these measures are adequate enough to stop mishaps.
About 83 training centres have been identified for imparting the physical training in morning hours. Its open to safety as well as non-safety category staff. The training centres will arrange the classes by engaging local agencies or RPF staff who are qualified in physical training. Those engaged in such classes will get a maximum of Rs 2,500 per month, the circular said.
