Normalisation of class 12 marks: No consensus as NITs meet
Sources said normalisation of marks between central boards like CBSE with state boards is the key challenge.

New Delhi: The council of National Institute of Technology (NITs) met here on Tuesday to deliberate on options for normalisation of class XII marks across school boards, but there was no consensus. Sources said the next round of meeting to hammer out a solution is likely next week, even as students across the country are already in midst of appearing for the Joint Entrance Examination 2013 under the new format for admission to undergraduate programme.

The meeting was chaired by HRD Minister MM Pallam Raju. Board marks, according to the new format, are to be 'normalised' across school boards to ensure a level playing field to students from all states. According to the format, 40 per cent weightage is to be given to Class XII scores after normalisation of marks in JEE Main for determining admission to NITs, IIITs and other engineering institutes.

A committee was also set up with experts from the Indian Statistical Institute, CBSE and IIT Kanpur among others to "normalise" the Class XII board results. Sources said normalisation of marks between central boards like CBSE with state boards is the key challenge for the experts given the wide variance in marks awarded by different boards.
