KOCHI: The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests has given its clearance for the Kochi-Kayamkulam gas pipeline. The clearance was given on an assurance by the authorities of the Gas Authority Of India Limited that any leakage on the pipeline would be rectified, if such a situation arises. The Centre had earlier refused to give clearance for the project due to the threat of leakage. The gas transported from the LNG terminal to National Thermal Power Corporation’s plant in Kayamkulam will be used to  generate 1,080 MW of power. The expected project cost is `907 crore.Of the 120-km-long   pipeline, 117 km will be offshore while 1.5 km each will be onshore at Vypeen and Kayamkulam.
