The Perfect Couple has one of the most surprising and unserious opening credits. The murder mystery Netflix series opens with the cast — Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Eve Hewson, Dakota Fanning and Ishaan Khatter, among others — dancing to the unreleased Meghan Trainor song “Criminals." Ishaan looked like a pro in the song while others also matched his steps. However, Ishaan told News18 Showsha exclusively that the opening credits song was not originally planned.
In a chat with us, the Bollywood star shared that the song was sprung on the cast on the last day of the shoot and they were hesitant about it. However, they still went in and danced their hearts out. The actor also revealed that much after the shooting ended, the showrunners told him that the song was introduced into the picture because of him. The makers had seen Ishaan’s dance videos and wanted it to be a part of the series.
“It was fun, I didn’t take it any more seriously than that. Yeah, I was a bit shocked when I was listening to it. I was like, ‘Is this a joke on us or is this for real?’ If I can say this later apparently they put that sequence because of me, because they saw my dance. This is what I was told by the showrunners. So, you know… You’re welcome," he shared a hearty laugh.
“We all went in with hesitation because it didn’t make any sense to us in the scheme of things, it was the last thing we shot in the show. It was Susanne’s idea and it was a brilliant idea because, also keeping it as an opening credits, nobody knew it would be the opening credits of the show. No one imagined it. I think it works only it offsets the tone of the show in such an unpredictable way. The only feedback I have received from the audience is that it’s the most unskippable intro of all time (laughs). So it’s great," he added.
His co-star Eve Hewson had previously painted a similar picture. She said that the cast was taken by surprise and a few even had a ‘meltdown’ when they found out. She added that many even called their agents but eventually, it all fell in place.
Ishaan also revealed that he had a ball with the cast during the four-month filming. “We had a lot of fun together and I think one of the things that kept us sane was being able to hang out and spend time with each other. There was not much to do on the Cape and we all had many days, that were whole days, where we were not working. Because it is an ensemble cast so somebody would be called in. But there were lots of days where we would all work but there were days where we would all hang out outside," he shared with us.
“One of the things we really enjoyed doing was, we did a trip to Province Town, which was an hour’s drive and we would go whale watching and we saw drag show on the same day, we got lobster roles, we had a lot of fun. We got into weird local activities like axe throwing and some strange things like that (laughs). There was like one bar and restaurant and that’s where we would hang out. It was good times, we would pool and whatnot. We did everything that there was there to do," Ishaan recalled.
