NGO questions Sanjay being allowed to smoke in jail
The Burning Brains Society has written a letter to Maharashtra CM Vilasrao Deshmukh.

New Delhi: A local NGO campaigning against tobacco on Friday questioned the reported permission given by authorities to actor Sanjay Dutt to smoke inside Arthur Jail in Mumbai.

The Burning Brains Society, in an letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, asked why Dutt should be allowed to smoke in prison when the law prohibits it.

"Why is there a special concession for him and why should the prison authorities bend rules for the nicotine addiction of a convict?," the letter said.

The letter has invoked the Right to Information legislation to get a response from the Maharashtra government.

It was an "erroneous belief that tobacco reduces stress. Rather, scientific studies have unambiguously concluded that tobacco consumption leads to hypertension," the letter said on reports that Dutt smoked cigarettes due to stress.

It appealed to Deshmukh to ensure that provisions of the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act were followed in letter and spirit and no inmate or jail official be allowed to smoke within the prison compound.
