Star Group chief executive, Michelle Guthrie says the company will invest according to priorities set by its Indian operations.

Hong Kong: News Corp unit, Star Group expects losses to continue in China, with no significant earnings seen for up to two years, leaving its Indian business to drive operations.

Star is "very close" to breaking even in Chinese television although difficulties with regulators remain the major obstacle, the report, carried in Financial Times Hong Kong-published Asian edition, said.

"The end game is not to make a dollar but to build a viable business in terms of creativity and revenue opportunities," Star Group chief executive Michelle Guthrie told the newspaper in an interview.

News Corp chairman Rupert Murdoch said in September that Chinese authorities were being "paranoid" about the foreign media, citing obstacles faced by his company and other major media groups there.

Guthrie said there were no plans to pull out of China but the company will invest according to priorities set by its Indian operations.

"We can't take the position, as some foreign media companies have, that we won't be in China potentially for the

next five years," she said.

"If we tried to do that and then tried to get in at a later date, we'd really be doing it from a standing start."

She added: "I don't think it's an option to significantly reduce that investment because it's one for the future."
