CHENNAI: Heeding to the locals’ demand for months, Thiruvotriyur Municipality has finally begun installing a new drainage pipeline along Thiruchinang Kuppam to drain out stagnant sewage.Commissioner of the municipality, S Kalaiselvan told City Express that at an estimated cost of `16 lakhs, the new pipeline would be installed for about two kilometers, and the work would be completed within a month. It may be noted that City Express had highlighted the sorry state of the area and continuing sewage overflow at Thiruchinang Kuppam on May 11.The to-be laid pipeline would remove stagnant sewage from the colony to the civic body’s pumping station and sewage treatment plant located near Apparswamy Koil Street, Kalaiselvan said.In a ceremony held at the colony on Tuesday, the newly elected AIADMK MLA for Thiruvotriyur constituency, K Kuppan launched the project in the presence of municipal chairman R Jayaraman and other important officials.“The civic body has also started a survey on the drainage pipes that has to be changed inside the colony for smooth outflow and all estimates would be worked out soon,” he added.Acting on City Express report on the issue and reacting to the local’s demand for the facility during his election campaigning in the hamlet, Kuppan, after being elected as MLA, held an extensive meeting with the municipal officials for the speedy implementation of civic projects. It may be noted that Kuppan, as an opposition leader in the Thiruvotriyur Municipality, had raised several such civic issues in the monthly meetings and received no answers from the official machinery.
