BANGALORE: Addressing the students of Tapovan Eco Club, New Horizon Pre-University College, on Friday, Environmentalist Suresh Heblikar stressed on the need to save the biodiversity on grounds of potential threats arising due to environmental degradation. He said, “We have to save biodiversity as it is getting extinct. If there is biodiversity, then only we would have food, medicines and macro planet. ” He also brought out the fact how ground water table has been falling in the city. He said, “Bangalore has nearly one crore population. The ground water is getting exhausted and has fallen by about 1,000 feet. We are drilling 1,200 feet into the ground to get water. The ground water is also contaminated.” “The city which had about 1,000 lakes is left with just 70 lakes now and most of these lakes are polluted with sewage water and other pollutants” he added.The students of the Eco-Club, in association with the Department of Forest, Ecology and Environment, have also taken up green initiative to assess the environmental scenario, trends of environmental pressures.
