In a candid conversation with Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about what keeps him going and how he is used to taking little rest. Calling PM Modi one of the most hard-working leaders in the world, Gates asked him what he does to relax, to which the Prime Minister replied saying that relaxation remains for him in autopilot mode.
“This energy doesn’t come from physical strength, but from my dedication and my emotional connection to the mission at hand. My commitment to my mission keeps me going. My body is now trained to what I do. For example, I can work late into the night and wake up early morning. I don’t have to make an extra effort to relax, it happens on autopilot,” PM Modi said.
“In the Himalayas, I followed the tradition of bathing in the Brahma Muhurat which is between 3:20 am and 3:40 am. These things have conditioned my body over time,” PM Modi told Gates.
The Prime Minister also spoke about how he led the fight against COVID-19 from the front and took the vaccine to lead by example for the country. When Gates asked how India witnessed little resistance to vaccination, PM Modi said, “It’s not virus vs the government. I viewed it as a life vs virus fight from the beginning.”
He also added how he began “communicating openly” with the nation from day one. “I publicly followed all COVID-19 protocol to gain people’s trust,” he added.
He said that even though people made fun of things like his calls for clapping, clanging utensils or lighting a lamp, it was important for him to “unite the nation” in the fight against coronavirus.
“I built people’s faith by being among the first to get vaccinated. My mother who was 95 years old then, took the vaccine publicly. I led by example and gained people’s trust that the vaccine could save their lives,” PM Modi told Gates.
In a 45-minute interaction, PM Modi and Gates spoke to each other on several topics including Artificial Intelligence, technology, Statue of Unity and more.
