Museum to be closed to public on all Mondays

Planning to spend some time in the shade of trees on Museum compound? Choose any day except Monday. The Museum compound will be closed to the public every Monday from September 3.

 Recently, the State Government gave the consent to close down Museum premises for cleaning and pruning activities once a week. Already, the zoo and Napier Museum are closed on Mondays.

Zoo Director K Udayavarman said the Museum premises would be closed every Monday after the Onam holidays. However, morning and evening walkers can continue with their routine programme. The Museum premises will be opened for them till 10 am and after 4 pm.

In order to inform the matter to the public, a notice in this regard has been placed on the Museum premises much in advance. Currently, workers at Museum are not getting sufficient time for cleaning the compound.

The Museum authorities have also received a nod to impose fine on littering on Museum premises. However, the authorities have not come to a decision on the fine amount. “A decision on littering will be made only after setting up waste bins and other facilities. The fine will be imposed only after deciding the fine amount,” Udayavarman said.

Carrying plastic bags is prohibited at the zoo. However, there was no such restriction on Museum premises. Cases of zoo animals dying of plastic consumption prompted the authorities to introduce restriction on littering on Museum premises.

The premises of Museum as well as the zoo constitute the Thiruvananthapuram Botanical Gardens. The garden has more than 200 species of trees, thousands of ornamental plants, orchids and anthuriums in its diverse collection.
