Mumbai: While it is the rainy season, residents of Mumbai continue to face shortage of drinking water. Several areas are getting impure and dirty water which is resulting in a large number of people falling sick. While the BMC has failed to take action, many people are using social media to vent their ire.
In some of the areas the water is so dirty that it cannot be used even for taking bath but Mumbaikars are forced to use it for drinking and cooking food.
Dongri is near the BMC headquarters but even here the situation is no different. While the BMC supplies water in the area, its residents claim it is unfit for drinking. When the BMC failed to act, many people used the social networking sites to take on the BMC and finally forced it to act.
Nandkumar, a resident of Dongri, said that he told many people to use WhatsApp Messenger, a cross-platform mobile messaging app, to send message to the ward officer and DMC who then took action to ensure supply of clean water.
According to the BMC statistics at least 765 people have been admitted due to the water-borne disease out of which 523 suffered from gastroenteritis. The toll could increase is statistics from private hospitals are added.
But the problem of dirty water cannot be solved unless the old and worn out pipes are replaced by the BMC.
