BANGALORE: Transport Minister R Ashok on Tuesday defended the State Government's decision to issue permits to 40,000 new autorikshaws in the city stating that it will make commuting easy besides reducing the sound and air pollution to a considerable extent.Speaking to reporters, Ashok also sought to allay the fears of Bagaloreans that the traffic might get further congested due to new autos. "All new autos will not hit roads at a time. They will be introduced in a phased manner," he said adding that there was a demand for new autos as the city has grown rapidly in the recent years.Financial AidWith the introduction of new autos, the sound and air pollution will also come down as new autos will have four stroke engines. Seeking to do away with old autos, the government has decided to provide a financial assistance of `15,000 each to drivers who wish to scrap or upgrade their twostroke threewheelers bought before 2000 into a fourstroke one with digital meters, he added.
