New Delhi: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi returned to join BJP's electioneering in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday amid speculation that the saffron party may have pulled him out of the poll campaign apprehending a minority consolidation in favour of its rivals.

Modi, who had campaigned for the party at the very early stage, had briefly gone out of the poll field. He hit the campaign trail again on Saturday by addressing a poll rally in Varanasi.

The BJP leader hit out at the UPA government at the Centre, alleging that the Centre's 'soft' attitude was responsible for the spate of terrorist activities in the country.

"The UPA government had scrapped the POTA after assuming power three years ago, which led to the spate of terrorist activities in our country and emboldened the subversive elements to such an extent that they have started raising anti-India slogans and displaying LeT's flags in full public view in Srinagar recently," Modi said.

The Congress-led UPA government was compelled by some parties in scrapping the anti-terror law POTA for votebank politics, Modi claimed and accused both the SP and BSP of being parties to the decision.

He took a dig at the Centre for 'sitting' on the decision over the execution of Parliament attack case convict Md Afzal. Modi also took to task the SP and BSP for their alleged silence on the Afzal issue for "votebank and minority-appeasement politics."

He raised the issue of illegal infiltration from Bangladeshi in the north-eastern states and claimed that the infiltrators were not only grabbing the employment opportunities of the natives, but also posing serious threat to the country's security.
