CHENNAI: DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Tuesday hailed the Supreme Court’s order on Uniform School Education as a victory for students and parents. He also took the opportunity to attack Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, saying she should take a cue from the SC judgment and desist from targeting schemes launched by the previous government.“The Supreme Court verdict is a big lesson for the AIADMK government. It should learn a lesson from this,” said Karunanidhi. He urged the State government to consult educationists, stakeholders and experts on how to mitigate the damage to education in this academic year due to 100 days of inactivity in schools. He also expressed hope that the government would implement the SC order as promised by the Chief Minister on the floor of the Assembly.Leaders of other parties too urged the government to implement the scheme in line with the Chief Minister’s promise.AIADMK ‘s ally CPM urged the government to take steps to ensure that textbooks are distributed at the earliest. ”The Common School Syllabus is an important component of USE, which is aimed at improving the system as a whole,” said CPM state secretary G  Ramakrishnan. The ruling party’s former ally and MDMK chief Vaiko was more belligerent in welcoming the SC order. “The order is a relief for parents. The SC has pointed out that actions of the government should not prove detrimental to students. It was wrong on the part of the government to do it at the very beginning of its term,” he said. Vaiko also criticised the government for repeatedly ignoring orders from the courts to implement the scheme. Now, he said, the government had no option but to implement the scheme. In Tirunelveli, DMK Treasurer former Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin said the verdict was on expected lines and it gave him great happiness. “If Karunanidhi was the Chief Minister when the verdict was pronounced, Jayalalithaa would have asked the DMK government to resign,” he said.Later, he distributed sweets to the public at Palayamkottai bus stand.
