New Delhi: The Supreme Court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping his daughter.
The court cancelled his bail petition and directed the police to take the accused into custody immediately.
The trial court had found the accused Asha Ram, who lived in servant quarters attached to the Raj Bhawan, guilty of raping his minor daughter on the night of August 28-19, 1988.
Earlier, the Himachal Pradesh High Court had acquitted the man and sentenced him to five year?s imprisonment with a fine of Rs 1000.
Expressing ?displeasure? against the Himachal Pradesh HC verdict, the SC Bench comprising of Justice H K Sema and Justice P P Naolekar sentenced the man to life imprisonment and enhanced the fine amount to Rs 25,000.
"When a father perpetrates this crime on his own daughter it is an extremely rare case which warrants a deterrent judicial hand," the apex court said.
The Bench remarked that despite strained relations, the family was living together happily and there was no reason why the daughter should have deposed a false case against her father, so as to lose her honour and dignity.
"No girl of self respect and dignity would accuse her father falsely, sacrificing her chastity at risk of condemnation by society," the Bench added.
