Mumbai: The focus of the annual Poonawalla racing event - that has acquired the reputation of being the Indian equivalent of the Royal Ascot – was not just horses.
Bollywood siren and headline-grabber Mallika Sherawat descended from the skies, quite literally, and added some action and much spice to the event.
Sherawat, dressed in a white dress and a sun-cheater, alighted from a helicopter at the venue, and was joined by Bollywood hunk Jackie Shroff on the podium.
And while adding to the glam quotient, the stars did seem a little candid about their actual preferences. "I usually come here for walks, not the races," Shroff said.
The Poonawalla races are supposed to be about pretty people making style statements with their hats and most of the P-3 types had their style mantra figured out.
"I'm dressed for the occasion. I have made the effort. I have my hat, my dark glasses, sun tan lotion, cotton clothing and high heels," socialite, Pooja Bedi quipped.
"A hat really adds to the sense of style," designer Naveen Kumar added.
Well, for the real race enthusiasts, there was plenty of racing action too. And as for the other thrill seekers, with mustangs and Mallika side by side, they were suitably rewarded.
The story of the Poonawalla Breeders’ Multi-Million is a success story about a sport, entertainment and a business venture whose evolution began with a vision from a time when million races were unheard of in India.
The concept of The Breeders’ Million Race evolved sometime in late eighties when members of the National Horse Breeding Society of India got together and decided to institute a race to be run on the lines of the Magic Million in Australia and The Cartier Million in Ireland.
