India assured assistance to SL to meet the challenge posed by the LTTE but asked both sides to exercise restraint.

New Delhi: India assured full assistance to Sri Lanka to meet the challenge posed by the LTTE but asked both sides to exercise restraint and find a peaceful solution to the conflict in the country.

At the two-day SAARC Summit External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said India had suggested that the proposed devolution mechanism should be examined and implemented within a time frame.

"Military solution will not yield results," UNI quoted the Minister as saying.

India has assured the Sri Lanka goverment it would assist in finding a peaceful solution to conflict, Mukherjee said at a press conference.

To a question whether LTTE posed any threat to India, Mukherjee parried a direct reply saying threat perception of a country depended on various circumstances.

Terrorism and terrorist activities were the biggest menace to world peace and tranquility, he said.
