Bhopal: In his first Independence Day address in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the construction of toilets in every school in India. 58,000 toilets have been constructed in Madhya Pradesh in the last one year at an expense of Rs 687 crore.
Network18's team visited three schools in Bhopal for a reality check and found that each school had a separate toilet for female students and staff. But the challenge for school authorities is maintaining these brand new toilets.
Project Director Mahendra Tiwari said, "There are seperate toilets for boys and girls. It is a challenge to maintain these toilets. State govt has given the responsibility to Municipal Corporation. We have also contracted a sweeper."
Modi had stressed on the need for toilets in schools to ensure that girls don't drop out.
School Education Minister(Madhya Pradesh) Paras Jain said, "We have completed the target that was given by the PM. We have made separate toilets of girls and boys and we have also repaired few of them."
