The Uttar Pradesh Police is working on some leads obtained during investigations into the gruesome rape and murder of a young woman whose nude body was recovered from Mohanlalganj area of the state capital, though no arrest has been made so far.
"We have got some leads and some people are also being questioned," Additional Director General (ADG) of Police Sutapa Sanyal, who has been asked by the state government to monitor investigations into the case, told reporters in Lucknow.
Sanyal, who visited the spot from where the body was recovered on Thursday, said that the identity of the victim has been established and she was a local. Refusing to divulge details of the investigation into the case, which she referred to as a "blind case", the ADG said it appears that more than one person was involved in the crime.
"The case has been registered under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 201 (destruction of evidence) and after the post-mortem report, section 376 (rape) has also been added," she said, adding that there are 12 injuries on the body of the victim including lacerated wounds. She said the time of her death has been mentioned as nearly one day before the time of post-mortem. The report of the post-mortem examination, conducted by a team of six doctors including a forensic science specialist, mentions shock due to ante-mortem multiple hemorrhage from different injuries as the cause of death. The body of the victim has 12 injury marks, including in the private parts.
Lucknow Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pravin Kumar has already suspended Inspector Kamruddin and an Assistant Sub-Inspector of Mohanlalganj police station on charges of dereliction of duty.
The incident came to light on Thursday when the nude body of the woman was spotted near a primary school in Balsingh Khera village of Mohanlalganj tehsil in Lucknow by a watchman. He informed the police around 6.30 AM. The area where the body was recovered is in the vicinity of Jabrauli village where tight security arrangements had been made in view of former United State President Bill Clinton's visit on Thursday.
ADG Sanyal said multiple teams have been pressed into investigation and the body will be preserved as of now.
Meanwhile, taking note of the Mohanlalganj incident, UP State Women Commission Chairperson Zareena Usmani and Member Secretary Anita Singh Verma on Friday visited the crime spot and sought a report from the police.
A release issued by the Commission stated that, besides discussing the matter with police personnel, they directed senior police officials to solve the case expeditiously. According to the release, the Commission sought a report on police action in the case, following which ASP Soumitra Yadav appeared before it.
The opposition parties have, however, blamed the state government of yet again failing on the law and order front.
BSP's RK Chaudhary termed the incident as yet another example of the Uttar Pradesh government's failure and sought Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's resignation on moral ground and BJP's Hriday Narain Dixit drew the attention of the Chief Minister to the incident and demanded immediate arrest of the culprits.
The city unit of the Congress submitted a memorandum to the Governor drawing his attention on the incident and demanding arrest of the culprits, besides urging him to direct the government to take the responsibility of the family members of the victim.
To a question on whether the Union Home Ministry has sought any report on the case, UP Home Secretary Kamal Saxena replied in the negative.
