Lucknow: If you believed only an apple a day could keep the doctor away, it's time to learn that a kilogram of sand a day can also keep the doctor at bay.
If Lucknow's octogenarian Ram Rati is to be believed, this new fitness mantra has kept her fit and fine for four decades.
Ram Rati ensures that she has enough sand to gulp down before her breakfast. She considers it an essential part of her daily diet.
Residing in Lucknow's Chinhar locality, Ram Rati has never suffered from indigestion. Her family and neighbours, watch this exercise of eating sand without missing a heartbeat.
Ram Rati says she cannot live without sand. "I have been eating sand daily for the past forty years. When young, I tried it for fun once. Since then, I am used to it," she says.
"My brothers and relatives pestered me to quit it but it was all in vain. I have no health hazards. Although I quit mud concrete, I could not get rid of eating sand. I eat on an average around one or one-and-a-half kilos of sand per day," says Ram Rati.
Shikha Mishra, her granddaughter, says, "She gets up at four o'clock in the morning, performs her prayers and then eats sand before breakfast. She eats it before lunch and evening tea. She collects sand from outside, dries it up in sunlight, and decants it. At times she roasts it too to suit her taste."
Initially, Ram Rati's family consulted several doctors who prescribed calcium doses and other treatments for her. But all went in vain when she refused to quit her habit. Finally, the doctors gave up.
Today, her family thinks that sand is the reason behind her active and healthy life. So much so, that people in Ram Rati's neighbourhood help her to procure sand for her daily diet.
"Doctor said if she has no health problems, let her eat. We think it suits her health. She either collects sand from construction site herself or our driver, washer man and other people get her sand to eat," says Shikha.
