Ambala (Haryana): The mortal remains of Garud Commando Gursewak Singh – martyred while fighting the terrorists at the Indian Air Force Station in Pathankot - were consigned to flames at his hometown in Ambala on Monday.
The martyr was accorded with gun salutes and the last rite was performed with full military honours. The martyr's family members were seen inconsolable.
In the morning, the body - wrapped in a tricolour - reached his village. A large number of people including Haryana Ministers Anil Vij and Abhimanyu were also present. "The whole nation will remember the sacrifice of son-of-the-soil," Vij said.
Senior officers from the Air Force, besides personnel from the army, police and civil administration were also present.
Gursewak's mother Amrik Kaur fainted several times while his widow Jaspreet Kaur was inconsolable.
Gursewak had joined Indian Air Force about six years ago after completing his graduation. His father Sucha Singh also served in the Army. "My son had gone to serve the nation. I am proud of him. He has done his duty. We are sad too," he said.
