CUTTACK: The Shanti Memorial Hospital here has introduced the latest laser guided surgery to treat kidney and ureteric and urinary bladder stones without resorting to cutting or incisions as in open surgical procedures. The team of surgeons and urologists led by CMD and chief metabolic and bariatric surgeon of the Hospital Dr Sreejoy Patnaik have successfully engaged the procedure in treating three patients from Nayagarh, Angul and Mayurbhanj respectively. The procedure known as retrograde intra-renal surgery (RIRS) involves usage of holmium-yag laser and a flexible ureteroscope to access the stones in the kidneys and pulverise them within moments. For urinary tract and bladder the stones are broken by the ureteroscope procedure (URS). This is for the first time in the State that laser surgery for kidney and urinary stone has been adopted. It is a completely painless procedure with drastically low risk of complications. According to Dr Patnaik, the main advantages the procedure offers are that it can be undertaken as a daycare procedure and patient can return to normal activities in two days. It can manage stones from any location in ureter or kidney with a proven success rate of over 99 per cent. It can treat stones of size up to 3 cm. “As it is almost an outpatient procedure, patients can easily walk home after a day. In open surgery, one has to undergo prolonged hospitalisation and will take more than a month to resume normal activities. But here the patient is able to get back to work in a couple of days,” he stated. RIRS and URS performed under general anaesthesia involves passage of the special telescopic equipment through the urethra and bladder up to the kidney to access the stone. Once the stone is located, light energy of the laser is used to break it into minute particles. The remnants would then easily pass out with urine by the patients. “A month-after examination is usually conducted to ensure that the stones are removed in toto,” Dr Patnaik added.
