The Sri Lankan refugees, who were rescued by the Mangalore police on Saturday, were sent back to their native villages on Sunday.
A team of Tamil Nadu police personnel, headed by Inspector Srinivas, took all the 84 refugees in two buses from near the CCB police station to Chennai around 6 pm.
The police had provided food to the refugees before they left the port city.
Earlier, IGP (Western Range) Pratap Reddy during a press conference at the commissioner’s office said among the 84 who were being trafficked to Australia 48 were registered Sri Lankan refugees, eight non-registered refugees and 21 Indian nationals.
Among them 42 were male, five female and one boy and among the Indians seven were men, 10 females, one boy and three girls.
Also three of them are from Karnataka, four from Kerala and others are from Tamil Nadu, he informed.
About the 13 men, who have been accused of trafficking, he said: “During the interrogation all accused claimed that it was the first time that they are trafficking from Mangalore.
The first two efforts have been foiled and the third attempt was also spoiled on Saturday by the alert policemen.
” The police would request with the court to handed them into the police custody for investigation, he added.
Reddy also denied the rumours that the 84 persons had just come to visit Kollur temple, and said it was a case of human trafficking.
The accused had asked the refugees to tell the same if any one questions them, the IGP said.
They were lured by saying that over 2,000 people had already benefited as they had been provided dignified job in Australia, he said and stressed that it was a case of human trafficking.
DCP Mutturaya Mutturaya was present during the press conference
