In the interest of the poor, Uttar Pradesh government has decided to remove Trade Tax on sale of lanterns.

Lucknow: Keeping in mind the interests of the poor and rural populace, the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to remove Trade Tax (TT) on sale of lanterns in the state.

Lantern, incidentally, is the election symbol of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo and Railway Minister Lalu Prasad, an arch political rival of state Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Announcing the waiver of 10 per cent TT on lantern, state chief secretary Naveen Chandra Bajpai said the decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by the CM.

"The decision was taken keeping in mind the interests of those living below poverty line (BPL) and the rural populace, who depend on it to light their homes," Bajpai added.

The decision would make the state exchequer lose Rs 15.75 lakh per annum. In another decision, the state cabinet decided to reduce the 24 per cent per annum Mandi fee to half.

The decision was made on the lines of an announcement made by the CM on April 28, 2006 in this regard.

From now onwards, instead of the earlier 2 per cent per month Mandi fee, the farmers would have to pay a flat rate of 12 per cent per annum. The fee is in addition to the annual Sales Tax of 12 per cent per annum.

The cabinet also decided to hike the compounding tax on bricks being exported out of UP to 20 per cent. The move would generate an additional revenue of Rs one lakh per month for the state exchequer.
