Officials prepare to load fuel in Unit I and II

Tension gripped Idinthakarai and surrounding hamlets on Saturday as the authorities started preparations to load fuel in units I and II of the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant on Sunday and PMANE deciding to lay siege to the plant protesting the move. Amid indications of the protest turning violent, the district police authorities have chalked out a bandobust plan, deploying 4,000 police personnel, including Rapid Action Force (RAF), around the plant.

Meanwhile, Idinthakarai and Koothankuzhi Village Committees have allegedly announced Rs 5 lakh solatium to the kin of the deceased, in case of any causalities during the protest organised by PMANE on Sunday. The announcement has raised many eyebrows.

But an email received by Express from PMANE functionary Pushparayan refuted the allegation and said that it was just a rumour.

S P Udayakumar, the co-ordinator of PMANE has announced that villagers would come out of the hamlet and lay siege to the KKNPP on Sunday, protesting the decision to start fuel loading.

Following this announcement police picketing was intensified in and around Idinthakarai and more than 4,000 policemen have been deployed.
